As we grow older, wiser and more mature, most things become less embarrassing. Braces on the other hand make the short list of things that are increasingly embarrassing the older you get. If you’re an adult in need of orthodontic treatment, don’t let shame keep you from attaining the smile you deserve. Dr. Alex Colalillo and his dental care team think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the improvements in traditional metal braces. They are much smaller and less noticeable than they once were, and for patients who would like a more discreet alignment option, we also offer Clarity braces and ClearCorrect aligners.
Orthodontic correction doesn’t just make your teeth look great, it also addresses numerous oral health concerns. Malocclusion places pressure unevenly on teeth while chewing. Over time, this uneven pressure can cause damage to the teeth that receive added pressure, and bite misalignment can contribute to TMJ disorders which can be extremely painful and require extensive treatment. Additionally, patients with dental irregularities often find it difficult to properly clean their teeth leaving them more susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease.
Traditional Braces – Metallic braces are made up of a system of brackets, wires, and bands that use pressure between teeth to align the bite. Wires are threaded through brackets bonded to the fronts of teeth. These wires are adjusted or banded together to move teeth to a specified location. The metallic material makes these braces the most noticeable. However, recent improvements in the size of brackets and placement of wires makes them less obtrusive than ever before, and they remain the best option to correct severe malocclusion.
Clarity – These braces work essential the same way that traditional braces do, but they are made from clear or tooth-colored materials for increased subtlety. The Clarity system is a great way to maintain your image while straightening even the most severely misaligned bite.
ClearCorrect – This is a clear braces alignment system that uses plastic alignment trays to gradually shift teeth into alignment. Unlike traditional orthodontics, ClearCorrect doesn’t rely on the pressure from other teeth to pull the bite into alignment. Instead, the aligner trays apply constant pressure to teeth gently shifting them into place. ClearCorrect generally takes less time to complete, requires fewer office visits, and patients report experiencing less discomfort compared to traditional braces. However, ClearCorrect isn’t right for every smile, especially not for patients who need extensive adjustment for over or underbite and other severe malocclusions.
